Diverse documents, chiefly of Spanish colonial origin. Included are legal documents, discussions of Spanish politics, biographies, and correspondence dealing with such matters as Inquisition trials, the Mexican Congress of 1823 and piracy. Includes letters of Leonardo Saldaña regarding Viceroy Juan de Palafox. Collection assembled by J. Horace Nunemaker.

Bishop of Puebla, Mexico, and Osma, Spain. Born 1600 in Fitero, Navarra, Spain; died 1659 in Burgo de Osma, Soria, Spain. Consecrated bishop of Puebla de los Ángeles, Mexico, on December 27, 1639; also served briefly as Archbishop of Mexico (1642-1643). In addition to his religious offices, Palafox y Mendoza was very involved in affairs of government and held the posts of fiscal of the Consejo de Guerra, fiscal of the Consejo de Indias, juez de residencia, visitador, and viceroy of New Spain.
